Nigeria Serves The World’s Best Coffee, Says One54 Africa’s Akbar

by The Culture Newspaper July 11, 2026
by The Culture Newspaper July 11, 2026

Nigeria may not be the first country that comes to mind when coffee lovers think of world-class brews, but One54 Africa podcast guest Akbar believes it deserves that recognition.

Speaking on the podcast, Akbar declared that Nigerian coffee rivals some of the finest in the world, citing his experience exploring the country’s growing coffee culture.

“The best coffee in the world is in Nigeria. It will rival any place in the world,” he said.

Akbar specifically highlighted Mai Shayi Coffee Roasters, the Abuja-based specialty coffee shop inspired by Northern Nigeria’s famous mai shayi tea culture, praising it as one of the places showcasing the quality of Nigerian coffee.

The comments have resonated with many Nigerians, sparking conversations about the country’s largely underappreciated coffee industry. While Nigeria is more widely recognised for cocoa production, coffee is cultivated in states including Taraba, Plateau and Cross River, with a growing number of local cafés and roasters championing homegrown beans.

Akbar’s endorsement has also reignited discussions about Nigeria’s potential as a destination for specialty coffee, with supporters arguing that greater investment in the sector could position Nigerian coffee more prominently on the global stage.

His remarks add to a growing appreciation for local coffee brands and cafés that are redefining how Nigerians and the world experience coffee, one cup at a time.
