Glam Dogs Recreate The 2024 Met Gala’s Most Iconic Looks For The Pet Gala

by The Culture Newspaper May 22, 2024

The first Monday in May might be for the Met Gala and its many celebrities, but the third Monday is for the dogs.

On May 20, the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City hosted the inaugural Pet Gala, a night of canine fashion modeled off the famous Met Gala.

The Pet Gala began in 2013 as a photo project by pet couturier and women’s wear designer Anthony Rubio. For years, Rubio recreated looks from the Met Gala for chic canines and then shared his creations via annual photoshoots. For 2024, Rubio partnered with the AKC Museum of the Dog to expand the project and turn it into its own glam event.

For the inaugural Pet Gala, dogs arrived in custom couture created by Rubio. Over the past two weeks, Rubio crafted all the Pet Gala canine fashions to ensure that each outfit was a pet-friendly recreation of a look from the 2024 Met Gala.

“I want people to understand that we’re not making fun of the Met Gala. We’re not mimicking the Met Gala,” Rubio told the Associated Press. “We’re elevating and appraising and appreciating the wonderful designs that were presented at the Met Gala by the most talented designers of the world.”

After the dogs posed for photos on the Pet Gala red carpet set up on the steps of the AKC Museum of the Dog, the pets and their humans enjoyed a runway show and seated dinner.

Over a dozen dogs wearing Rubio’s designs attended the Pet Gala. The event included a Chihuahua dressed in a canine version of Zendaya’s first 2024 Met Gala look, a pup wearing a Jennifer Lopez-inspired ensemble, and much more.
