A new exhibition showcasing original Regency fashions has opened in Lancaster.

Style and Sensibility: Regency Fashion offers a glimpse into distinctive European clothing and accessories dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Viewers can take a “step back in time” to the eras of Bridgerton and Jane Austen, Lancashire County Council said.

The exhibition is housed within the historic walls of the city’s oldest townhouse, the Judges’ Lodgings.

The garments include walking and morning dresses and ball gowns that were once worn by affluent women across Lancashire and the wider region.

Each is accompanied by archival materials, including original fashion plates, letters, and poems, to highlight the fashion sensibilities of the period.

The costumes have undergone conservation, cleaning and repair.

Museum manager Lynda Jackson said: “A huge thanks to the team here at Judges’ Lodgings for putting together a fantastic exhibition.

“We can’t wait to see people come through the doors and experience it for themselves.”
