What began as a book on intentional friendship has grown into a movement of about 50,000+ community members inspiring individuals to build meaningful relationships and combat loneliness in Lagos, Nigeria.
The BFF Festival, convened by Adetoun Jegede, traces its roots to the 2023 release of Building Forever Friendships, a book that sparked conversations around healthy, intentional relationships. Those conversations soon led to the BFF Conference and have since evolved into the BFF Festival, an annual gathering held to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Friendship.
This year’s festival, held at the Celebr8 Centre, Acme Road, Ogba, Lagos, recorded an impressive number of about 9,000 registrations, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds under one message, “Surrounded: Together is Better.”
The event featured conversations on friendship, emotional well-being, purpose, accountability, and community. Delivering the keynote address, Apostle Emmanuel Iren encouraged attendees to intentionally build relationships that strengthen purpose, faith, and destiny, reminding them that no one was designed to do life alone.
Another major highlight was the launch of Adetoun Jegede’s latest book titled “Surrounded,” which focuses on embracing the beauty of community, recognizing and nurturing the meaningful connections surrounding us, and addressing the growing challenges of social isolation and loneliness through intentional relationships and authentic community.
The festival also hosted engaging panel sessions that addressed contemporary friendship challenges. The men’s panel, “Strong Men, Strong Bonds: Breaking the Myths Around Men’s Mental Health, Vulnerability, Money and Friendship,” featured Mr. Emeka Mba and Mr. Samuel Jegede, moderated by Michael Awonowo. The discussion encouraged men to embrace vulnerability, prioritize their mental health, and build genuine brotherhood.
The women’s panel, “Female Friendships: Breaking the Myths of Female Friendships,” brought together friends of over two decades, Tosin Ayo-Ishola and Tosin Sanni, alongside Coach Sola Adesakin and Mrs. Omolara Afolabi, moderated by Maryam Eje. The conversation challenged stereotypes surrounding female friendships and emphasized trust, collaboration, healthy boundaries, and emotional support.
One of the day’s most powerful moments came through the stage play titled Surrounded, performed by some of Nollywood’s finest talents. Nehita Ofure Irieme who played Ayanfe, Ariiyike Dimples Owolagba as Elizabeth, Bayo Bankole as Chris, and Tolulope Abiodun who played Shadow. The production explored betrayal, friendship hurts, forgiveness, and healing, leaving many in tears as the audience reflected on their own experiences. The play was written by Shallom Umerie, produced by Onome, Agesse and directed by Ebenezer Shobowale, Assistant director Maurice Edem. The emotional atmosphere culminated in a heartfelt prayer session for wounded hearts led by Pastor Laju Iren, providing comfort and hope to many in attendance.
The festival also featured musical performances by Anendlessocean,Saelem and OB Nelson, energetic sounds by DJ Horphuray, a spoken word presentation by The Publisher, networking activities, games, and opportunities for attendees to build genuine friendships beyond the sessions.

Speaking on the vision behind the movement, Adetoun Jegede said the BFF Festival was created to respond to the growing epidemic of loneliness by helping people discover the power of authentic community.
From the pages of Building Forever Friendships to the launch of the Surrounded book, the BFF movement continues to remind people that life is richer when shared with others.
