The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) returned to its pre-Covid19 glory on Sunday for the 17th edition of the prestigious awards ceremony after film industries across the world, especially Africa, endured production woes.

Last year’s edition of the event held virtually in line with government guidelines of Covid-19 which prohibited large gatherings which the AMAA is known for.

Speaking during the well-attended awards gala at the Lagos Marriot Hotel last night, President of AMAA Jury and Former Commissioner For Tourism, Arts and Culture in Lagos State, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, applauded the calibre of movies the awards jury received from across the continent and by Africans beyond the shores of the continent.

Ayorinde, who is Chair of the 12-man jury for a second consecutive year, added that the submissions were evidence of Africa’s resolve not to be deterred by the pandemic and how filmmakers are exploring the COVID theme among others in their works.

“Our message this year, after watching hundreds of beautifully-made films – be they features, documentaries, shorts or animation – is simple; continue to be resolute in telling the stories of and about Africa in our own uniquely edifying way.

“For this is a beautiful continent, resolutely and relentlessly wired to withstand and confront every of life’s challenges. And in going through those different phases of life, like the one we are currently confronted with, we must be the first to put our stories of resilience and tenacity out. Because we deserve to be heard.

“As a jury, we have seen yet again the determination in which the African continent is dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and how filmmakers are capturing this unusual times among other themes they are exploring with confidence and competence that deserve the type of reward which AMAA is once again according those outstanding works at its 17th edition today,” he said in the Jury statement before handing over the envelope bearing the names of award winners on the night to the Founder of AMAA, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.
