AMVCA Celebrates Africa’s New Creative Culture

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards Cultural Day highlighted the growing convergence of Africa’s film, fashion, music and digital content industries, as creators and brands used the platform to showcase the continent’s evolving creative economy.

Held in Lagos recently ahead of the annual awards ceremony, the event drew actors, designers, musicians and online creators. Their appearances and collaborations reflected how African storytelling is increasingly extending beyond cinema into fashion, live performance and social media culture.

According to organisers, what was once largely viewed as a ceremonial prelude to the awards has steadily developed into a commercial and cultural showcase for brands and creatives seeking influence across multiple entertainment sectors.

This year’s event featured contemporary interpretations of traditional African fashion, while creators documented the experience across digital platforms in real time, underscoring the growing role of online audiences in shaping cultural relevance and visibility.

Johnnie Walker Black Label, one of the brands associated with the event, used the occasion to reinforce its Johnnie Walker AfroExchange platform, an initiative centred on African creativity and cross-cultural collaboration.

Group Head of Culture, Influencers and Advocacy at Diageo South, West and Central Africa, Ifeoma Agu, said in a statement, “At Johnnie Walker, our belief in progress has always been captured through our ‘Keep Walking’ philosophy, celebrating those who continue to push boundaries, evolve their craft, and move culture forward with intention across music, film, art, fashion and digital culture.”

She added that the company aimed to create “spaces where African creativity, collaboration, and cultural exchange can thrive beyond the moment itself.”

The firm said its brand’s presence also reflected the increasingly fluid movement of African creators across entertainment formats. Elozonam Ogbolu, one of the personalities associated with the brand during the AMVCA week, was nominated in the Best Digital Content Creator category, highlighting the growing commercial relevance of online creators within mainstream entertainment.

The rise of Cultural Day mirrors broader shifts in Africa’s creative industries, where fashion, music and digital media are becoming central to how film-related events attract audiences, sponsorships and cultural influence.

They said the blending of entertainment sectors is creating new commercial opportunities for brands seeking to connect with younger African audiences whose consumption habits increasingly span streaming platforms, social media and live experiences simultaneously.
