Amarachi Okpara Broadens Lagos Art Scene With New Gallery Opening

A new art gallery is preparing to open in Lagos next month, adding to the city’s expanding contemporary art scene and reflecting the continued growth of private galleries in Nigeria.

The space, Amyafrique Art Gallery owned by Nigerian entrepreneur, Amarachi Judith Okpara, began with a small collection of artworks and gradually expanded, as Amarachi built connections within the art community and learned more about the industry.

Speaking on the vision behind it, Amarachi said the project was born from personal experience, years of professional transitions and a desire to build something meaningful.

“This is not just a gallery. It is resilience. It is reinvention. It is the story of a woman who kept becoming again and again,” she said.

Before entering the art world, Amarachi’s journey took many turns, working across various fields including events, fashion, modeling and aviation before finding her true calling in art.

She revealed that her love for art fully came alive after visiting a gallery in Lagos, a moment she described as life-changing.

“I walked in and something inside me woke up. That was the moment I knew I wanted to build a gallery of my own,” she said.

Preparations for the opening have drawn interest from artists, collectors and members of the public ahead of its official launch.
