The Emerging Abuja Projects, organisers of Abuja’s first-ever Groovy December Festival, says the initiative aims to attract up to 20 million tourists over the next four years.
The Project Coordinator, Dr Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, said this on Tuesday during the “Walk for Tourism” awareness event held across key locations in Abuja ahead of the official festival launch.
“The Walk for Tourism is designed to excite residents and build anticipation for the festival.
“Groovy December is a series of more than 35 events that will showcase our city’s rich culture, tourism, and entertainment offerings to Nigerians and the diaspora,” Ibe-Kalu added.
He explained that 45 coordinators are engaging Nigerians abroad to promote the festival and encourage international participation.
“We want Abuja to become a major destination for cultural tourism.
“Festival activities will include hiking and guided tours at Karshi Waterfalls and Ushafa Village, food festivals, Suya competitions, and football tournaments.
“These activities are meant to offer something for everyone; residents, tourists, and families alike.
“Cultural showcases will feature the Culture Fest, Miss Groovy December, and Groovy Tombola.
“Local vendors will also have the opportunity to showcase and sell their products, boosting small business growth during the festival.
“We are confident that Groovy December will become a signature event for the city and the country, he said.
Ibe-Kalu emphasised the partnership between private organisers and government agencies, noting that security measures have been fully implemented to ensure a safe environment for all participants.
“Funding is primarily from private partners, while government agencies provide technical, professional, and regulatory support.
The coordinator said the festival will also host the Emerging Abuja Diaspora Investment Forum on Dec. 17, aimed at promoting investment, tourism, and economic opportunities.
“This forum will connect diaspora investors with local opportunities, ensuring long-term benefits for Abuja,” Ibe-Kalu said.
Speaking at the FCT Exhibition Pavilion, Imoh Ebong, Chairman of the Groovy December Central Planning Committee, described the festival as a landmark celebration.
“Groovy December is about re-marketing Nigeria through Abuja, celebrating our culture, our people, and our tourism potential,” he said.
He added that the festival, mandated by the FCT Administration, combines entertainment, culture, and tourism for residents and visitors alike.
“A key highlight of today’s event is the Walk for Tourism, which will take participants across major locations in Abuja to remind everyone that something big is coming this December.
“The FCT Pavilion will serve as the festival hub, featuring a 24-hour music stage, a dedicated kiddies’ corner, and interactive family spaces.
“We are ensuring that the festival is inclusive and family-friendly,” Ebong added.
Ebong urged residents and visitors to join the celebrations, saying, “From Dec. 15 to Dec. 31, the FCT Pavilion is the place to be in Abuja. There will be something for everyone, every day.”
He added that the festival is expected to boost local tourism, support small businesses, and position Abuja as a major national and international festive destination.
