Idris Elba Says A Black James Bond Is “Not A Realistic Thing,” Calls Years Of Rumours Unfounded

Hollywood star Idris Elba has finally addressed one of the entertainment industry’s most enduring rumours, that he was in line to play James Bond, firmly stating that the speculation was never grounded in reality and that casting a Black actor in the iconic role remains an unlikely prospect.

Speaking in an interview with British GQ published on Monday, June 8, the 53-year-old Masters of the Universe star said the rumours, which first gained traction in 2008, were never based on any legitimate discussions.

“It was never legit. It was always just a rumour,” Elba told the publication, adding that he has always personally felt the idea was not realistic.

The speculation originally took off at the Italian premiere of Quantum of Solace, when then-Bond actor Daniel Craig suggested that Barack Obama’s historic U.S. presidential election victory signalled Hollywood might be ready for a Black James Bond.

Elba, while expressing gratitude for the compliment, went on to explain the commercial and cultural realities he sees behind his position.
“Bond is big all over the world. And audiences won’t all go for a Black or African male playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period,” he said.

The actor also pushed back against attempts to reimagine the franchise through a modern social lens, cautioning that Bond should remain true to its identity as pure escapism.
“Don’t try to answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond,” he said.

The rumours had gained notable credibility in 2014 when a leaked email allegedly showed Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal expressing her belief that Elba should be considered for the role following Daniel Craig’s eventual departure from the franchise.
